Hello,
I have been using Turbotax since 2018. I started college in 2019 fall and completed final semester in 2023 spring.
Trubotax provided in American Oppurtunity Tax Credit(AOTC) for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 as well.
I now have received mail from IRS listing the error.
I have imported previous years return when filing for next year, not sure, why Turbotax allowed the credit to be included for 2023.
I'd now have to file amended return. I tried to back in Turbotax and it doesn't let me change the qualify flag for AOTC. Would appreciate any help in how to do the amended filing and what recourse I have with Turbotax for incorrectly doing my taxes.
Thanks

Did the IRS letter tell you to amend or are they adjusting your return? When you claim AOC in TurboTax you are asked if you have claimed it for 4 years.
IRS asked to file amended return for federal, state and local tax returns.
When filing initially, it didn't ask me number of years AOC was claimed. However, It did ask me, if I was a full time student at least 5 months in 2023.
Here is a screen shot of the screen that asked you how many years you claimed the American Opportunity Credit. If you had answered 4 or more you would not have qualified for the credit.
Does Turbotax asks this question even if previous year filed return was imported. It didn't ask in my case.
Yes. That question is part of the program.

TurboTax always asks that question. If information was transferred from the previous year the screen would have the number of years already filled in, based on the number of years specified in the prior-year tax return. So the number of years might have been incorrect in your 2022 tax return, and the erroneous information was transferred to your 2023 tax return. If you were working quickly you might have clicked Continue without reading the screen carefully, or you might have just not noticed that the number of years was wrong.
