TurboTax does not support filing status changes for EV Credit (Form 8936)

I have purchased an new EV in 2023. I qualify the income limit with my 2022 AGI/head-of-household-threshold and not the 2023 AGI/single-threshold. I understand TurboTax does not support calculations where the the filing status has changed between 2022 and 2023.

What should customer like us do in this cases? Should we file by paper, if so how can we manually generate form 8936 and update the 1040 form accordingly?

TurboTax does not support filing status changes for EV Credit (Form 8936)

You can add forms and override forms in TurboTax, but you need to use the desktop program, which has Forms Mode, to do so.   You would need to manually calculate the credit using the form 8936 instructions, override the form and print and mail your tax return.

Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't have to override anything. Returns that contain overrides cannot be e-filed and may not be covered under our 100% Accurate Calculation Guarantee.

How to switch to desktop

You can change the amount of your 2022 income in any version of TurboTax; the field to compare the modified AGI is an editable field.

Thanks! I was able to make the overrides in the Desktop version.

Can I still e-file in this case? or should I paper file with a cover letter explaining the situation.

You can try to e-file but the system probably will not let you.  If you paper file you don't need to include a letter explaining the situation since the IRS supports this calculation even though TurboTax does not.
