State Taxes Defaulting to Standard Deduction vs. Option for Itemized

I was very frustrated to learn that I almost paid $1,300 more in taxes to State of California, because the state portion of TurboTax defaulted to standard deduction. Yes, the standard deduction was better for Federal, but why does the system not prompt for an option for state? People could be paying thousands more in taxes and had no idea? I happened to look at my prior years tax forms and saw state was itemized. I have seen other posts on this issue, so please update the system to prompt or look for best options no matter what state!
