Solar Tax Credit

Hello,

I have a few questions regarding the federal solar tax credit.

1. The system was financed in only my fiancé’s name, however we both split the cost. Is he the only one allowed to claim the credit or can we split the credit 50/50 on taxes? We both own the house as well.

2. Since we are not married yet we file as single, however next year we will file as married. If we are both able to claim half of the system and both have solar tax credit carryovers from this tax year (2023) will that be able to be combined when we file as married for 2024 to receive the full credit (30%)?

Solar Tax Credit

Yes and Yes.   You can split it this year, and next year when you file joint, you can combine your carryovers.   Clean Energy Credit
