Sale of Inherited Property

My siblings and I inherited our mom’s home when she died in 2001. We just sold the property in 2023. No one lived in the home. We just maintained it and held onto it all these years. My nephew stayed there for a couple years  but it was just as a safe house before he started his life, not to collect rent. How do I find out how much the home was worth when our mother died?  The closest I could find was a tax assessment on Zillow from 2000 for 71,000. Strangely enough the tax assessments on Zillow skip years 2001, 2002 and just jumps to 2003 which shows the value dropping to 60,000. Unfortunately we have little to no paperwork showing the home’s value the year she died. Can we use the 2000 tax assessment figure? She died in 2001. We all received 1099S forms.

Sale of Inherited Property

You should contact a certified real estate appraiser or a local real estate broker in the area in which the property is located for a date of death valuation.
