HSA distribution should not be taxed, but I can't make that change. Help?

My total distributions are being taxed as income, yet they were spent on unreimbursed medical expenses.  How do I get this system to take them off?

HSA distribution should not be taxed, but I can't make that change. Help?

The Form 1099-SA reports a distribution from your Health Savings Account (HSA).  It is entered in the Medical section of the Deductions and Credits part of your return.   When this information is entered, there will be a question to answer to indicate that all of the distribution was used to pay for qualified medical expenses.  This will make the distribution non-taxable.

Use the following steps to go directly to that section:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-SA” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-SA
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-SA” link
