There have been important changes to the Child Tax Credit that will help many families receive advance payments. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 expands the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for tax year 2021 only. Below are frequently asked questions about the Advance Child Tax Credit Payments in 2021, separated by topic.
Hello! So if a child is born in 2020, that child should be claimed in that tax year. The IRS is basing their Advance Child tax credit payments on that 2020 filing, so if you have not yet filed your 2020 taxes - File your 2020 tax return. Even though you did not receive the Child Tax Credit based on your 2019 tax return, you may receive advance Child Tax Credit payments based on the number of qualifying children allowed on your 2020 tax return. The payment will start in July or the month after your 2020 tax return is processed, whichever is later.
The Advance child tax credit is based upon your eligibility for credits in 2021, but the advance payments have only gone out to people based upon their 2020 and 2019 tax filing status. https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/2021-child-tax-credit-and-advance-child-tax-credit-payments-t...
If you have to make updates to your dependents, you'll have to wait until later on in the summer, that function isn't available on the portal quite yet. https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/2021-child-tax-credit-and-advance-child-tax-credit-payments-t...
