Property tax deduction

I have a question regarding a property tax deduction on our main residence.

My wife and I are filing jointly and we’re taking the standard deduction like most. I added our property tax amount and the federal refund amount stayed the same, BUT our state refund increased. I thought you couldn’t claim property taxes if you took the standard deduction? Does state allow you to claim property taxes but federal does not if you standard deduction? I’m confused why state is giving me a bigger refund for our property taxes with a standard deduction. Thanks!

Property tax deduction

States often have lower thresholds for itemizing. So report all of your itemized deductions and TurboTax will automatically use the itemized deduction for state and standard deduction for federal if that’s better for you.
