My taxes say I qualify for a home energy credit of 9,202 - but I am about to finalize my taxes and I am getting back 8,712 federal and 136 state - what am I missing?

Part of that credit may have lowered your tax liability, the tax you would have owed without the credit. 

So if you would have owed $490 tax, but got a 9,202 credit, that would result in a 8,712 refund.
