Lapse in health care coverage

Husband and children are on one plan through employer wife is on her own health insurance, both high deductible, health plan. If I choose Family for Husband; says lapse in coverage if I choose self for wife; says lapse in coverage if I switch them around, it’s the same. I don’t want to say NONE Right? Because there was never a lapse for either HDP! Help

Lapse in health care coverage

There is a special rule for married persons with multiple HDHP plans for the year.  If one person has family coverage while the other has self-only coverage, you both must check the box that you have family coverage.  This is because you will be subject to the maximum contribution amount that is equal to the family coverage amount.

Here's more info on Multiple HDHP Plans.

Lapse in health care coverage

To clarify, are you entering Form 1099-SA?

Did you have contributions on your W-2?

Are you working from Deductions & Credits-Medical or Wages and Income-Less Common Income?

First Screen is "Your HSA summary"

Select EDIT

Do you have both checked for HSA on next screen, "Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2023"

Do you have 1099-SA listed? select EDIT

Continue through interview

Did you use for medical expenses?

Did either inherit this HSA?     select NO

Enter contributions not reported on W-2

Did you have Medicare?  NO

Was first listed covered by high deductible plan ?  YES   what type   FAMILY

Now lets cover the spouse

Did they inherit it?   NO

Enter contributions not reported on W-2

Did they have Medicare?    NO

Was Spouse listed covered by high deductible plan ?  YES   what type   FAMILY

Did you overfund?    NO
