Last year, we got $2000 deduction for my daughter and this year we only got $500. Why is this?

Daughter older than age 16 (or over 23 and not a full-time student) perhaps?

Then, unless she is a full-time student, she is too old for the credit.  All you can get is the $500 other dependent credit.
