Is TT capable of amending my return to reflect the 12/12/24 law(HR 5863--Federal Disaster Relief Act)? TT tells me std deduction is best and ignores the casualty loss.

This law allows me to deduct casualty losses from this disaster in excess of $500, without itemizing. So I should be able to use the standard deduction and still be able to deduct the casualty loss. When I try to amend the return, TT just says I should use the standard deduction and says my itemized deduction, which it correctly calculates as the casualty loss amount less $500, would be less. TT does not seem to recognize the recent law change so I wonder if some fix to TT is underway?

we have not received official word from the moderators, but it is very likely that the program has not been updated, and that it may be many weeks or even months before the program is updated. The law was passed very recently, and as far as I know, not even the IRS has updated their forms and instructions, or updated their computer system. Even if TurboTax allowed the deduction, it won’t go through until the IRS programs their computers to recognize the situation.

I think you can expect that it will be several weeks before TurboTax is available to accept a 2024 tax return using the new rules, or process amended prior year tax returns under the new rules.  Hopefully TurboTax will put out a bulletin or create a mailing list, sign up to receive notification of when the issue is ready to file.
