Is a new roof tax deductible

I rent out a basement apartment in my home. This year I needed to replace the roof for the entire house. Can I deduct a portion of the cost of the roof, as an expense for the apartment.

You can't deduct the roof as an expense, but you can list the roof (proportionate share for rental) as an improvement for your rental and deduct depreciation for it over its useful life.
