In the help, it shared that a new roof can be used as an energy credit. But when completing the template, a new roof was not an option; the energy credit was set to $0.

In the help, it shared that a new roof can be used as an energy credit. But when completing the template, a new roof was not an option; the energy credit was set to $0.

Generally, if you invest in certain types of solar roofing equipment like solar roofing tiles and shingles, which serve as both a form of solar electric generation and traditional roofing, such investments can qualify for the credit.  Expenses to upgrade or replace a roof for installing solar panels and related equipment are not qualified for this credit.

You may also claim a credit for the purchase of energy-efficient doors, windows, skylights, certain roofs and the cost of increasing insulation in the home. However, you cannot include the installation costs for this equipment in the credit.

Per the IRS FAQ (Link Below) on Energy Incentives:

Q. Is a roof eligible for the residential energy-efficient property tax credit?

A. In general, traditional roofing materials and structural components do not qualify for the credit. However, some solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles serve as solar electric collectors while also performing the function of traditional roofing, serving both the functions of solar electric generation and structural support and such items may qualify for the credit. Components such as a roof's decking or rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function do not qualify for the credit.

If you meet these qualifications for your new roofing, you can enter energy credits by going to your search bar at the top right of your screen and type in "Energy Credit"s and select the "Jump to Energy Credits".

It will look like this:

It will take you to a screen where you can enter your energy credit information.
