If you've entered information in the TurboTax program that indicates you're eligible for the STAR credit, you should be able to enter your information.

To get back to the relevant section in TurboTax Online:

  1. Select Tax Home in the left pane
  2. On the  Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, select the dropdown on the right side of the State Taxes box, then select StartContinue, Pick up where you left off, or Review/Edit
  3. If you land on a New York interview page, select Let's get started, Continue or other similar prompt.  Otherwise, in the left pane, select Prepare State, then proceed through the New York screens
  4. Proceed through the state screens until you come to the Tell us if you received one of these New York tax breaks in 2023 screen.  If you received and advance STAR credit payment in 2023, enter the amount and select Continue.  Otherwise, just select Continue
  5. Answer appropriately on the Did you receive a notice from the Tax Department indicating your STAR credit advance payment was underpaid in 2023? screen, then select Continue
  6. If you answered Yes on the previous page, enter your information on the STAR Credit Property Information screen.  Otherwise, when you get to the Take a look at New York credits and taxes screen, select Update to the right of Property Tax Relief or STAR Credit and IT-119

In the following screens, you can enter your STAR credit information.

NOTE: If, at some point in the steps above, you land on the Take a look at New York credits and taxes screen, you can get to the STAR interview by selecting Update to the right of Property Tax Relief or STAR Credit and IT-119.

If you've entered information in the TurboTax program that indicates you're not eligible for the STAR credit, you may not be able to enter your information.  According to the Instructions for Form IT-229Real Property Tax Relief Credit, to be eligible for this credit, you must meet all the following requirements:

  • you are a New York State taxpayer who, for the purposes of this credit, is required to file a return under Tax Law Article 22;
  • you were a New York State resident for all of the tax year;
  • you owned real property that:
    • was your primary residence for six months or more of the tax year, and
    • received the STAR benefit as either an exemption or a credit;
  • any rent you received from nonresidential use of your residence was 20% (0.2) or less of the total rental income you received;
  • you paid the real property taxes on the property fully or partially; and
  • your qualified gross income was $250,000 or less.

To see if you may have received a STAR credit, you can look up property tax credits previously paid to you on the Department of Taxation and Finance's Property Tax Credit Lookup tool.

There are several things going on.

First, if you pay your full property tax bill and then get a STAR rebate check, you must reduce the amount you report as a property tax deduction in the federal income tax section (as part of your mortgage).  You must do this yourself, Turbotax does not calculate it for you.  If you paid a reduced property tax amount due to having the credit on your bill, don't modify your deduction because it was already reduced.

Second, I believe there is a general question on the New York form asking if you got a rebate.  Enter it here, but this has no effect on your taxes, it's just a question they ask.

Then third, you can claim the property tax relief credit, it should be listed on the page for state-specific additions and subtractions.  Answer the questions provided.
