You find a property appraiser and explain you need an appraisal to value the property for the date your G-father passed. Its really that simple.
As a last resort, you would use the tax valuation records in the county property tax appraiser's office. But that's a last resort because the county property appraiser will always value the property at significantly less than it's real FMV value. That would mean a much more significant taxable gain on the sale.
