I skipped entering the sales tax paid for a car purchase thinking I could enter it later. Can I enter it before filing?

I skipped entering sales tax paid in 2023 for a vehicle purchase. The software won't let me go back and enter it now. How can I enter this information? Also selected itemized deduction so I could enter a few deductions not accounted for. The software also won't let me change this back to standard deduction.  How can I edit these items.

As long as you have not submitted your returns, you can go back and add deductions; you can also switch back and forth between itemizing and taking the standard deduction.

You have to go through the entire sales tax interview to enter sales tax paid on major purchases; it is at the end of the interview.

If you’re taking the sales tax deduction, here’s how to enter the sales tax you paid:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Search for sales tax and select Jump to sales tax in the search results.
  3. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax info:
    • Choose EasyGuide if you want us to walk you through it.
    • Choose Enter All My Receipts if you’ve saved all of your receipts and can give the grand total.
    • Once the above is complete, you can enter tax on the car.

Itemizing state and local taxes OR sales tax - which to choose

How to switch from standard deduction to itemizing or vice versa

What is the difference?    See this link for more information; TurboTax will default to the higher deduction, but you can change it at any time before you file your tax return.
