I paid for both train and subway to get to self-employment job. Does that count as an expense I can write off?

I worked as a fee for service therapist and had to pay for my commute to get there.

No -- that is your 'commute'. But, you can deduct mileage from your place of self-employment to/from other locations which are related to your self-employment job.
