I'm unable to edit/remove the Child and Dependent Care Expenses in TurboTax for Virginia State taxes. I am a part year resident and the expenses did not occur in VA.

There is a blue box at the top of one of the screens that reads "Child and Dependent Care Expenses" that has an Edit button in it. When I click on the button, it takes me to another screen, but there is nothing to edit. It just says "Your eligible dependent care expenses are .... for 2023". My options are "Back" or "Continue". Both take me back to the original screen.

The chatbot suggested I go to the Credits section for the State, but there was no mention of the Child and Dependent Care Expenses in that screen.

Am I overlooking something?

While the VA instructions frequently say to pro-rate or only count VA items, this is not the case for child care. The Child and Dependent Care Expenses  in the Deductions | Virginia Tax state:

You may qualify to claim this deduction if:

  • You were eligible to claim a credit for child and dependent care expenses on your federal income tax return.
  • You can claim the Virginia deduction even if you weren’t able to claim the federal credit.

How much is the deduction?

The amount of the deduction is equal to the amount of child and dependent care expenses used to calculate the federal credit (not the federal credit amount). The maximum amount of deduction allowed is based on how many dependents you have:

  • $3,000 for one dependent
  • $6,000 for two or more dependents
