HSA Confusion

In my HSA (which was opened by me, nothing to do with an employer): I contributed on 1-5-2023 and then was told the amount was more than the allowable amount so I received back on 2-6-2023 the amount in excess.  I have a 1099-SA showing the amount that I received back.

I am unclear on how to populate the fields in TurboTax Desktop Download Premier.

For example, if the amount originally contributed was $3,233 and the amount that was in excess that I received back was $752 (and this $752 is what is showing on the 1099-SA, box 1, gross distribution)...

On Form 8889, what number should Part I, line 2 be; $3,233 or $2,481?  (Part II, lines 14a and 14b show the $752 excess contribution.)  Part 1, line 2 flows to Schedule 1, line 13, and then onto 1040 line 10 and they both show $3,233.

It seems to me that the $3,233 figure on the 1040 line 10 is giving me credit for more HSA contributions than I really had as my net contribution was $2,481.

Can anyone advise me on this? Thanks.

HSA Confusion

Your description puzzles me. Yes, line 2 on the 8889 s/b $3,233, but there should be other lines filled in besides the ones you list.

So please tell us what type of HDHP policy that you had (Family or Self), and also which months you had it. This would make it easier for me to complete your 8889.
