How to enter foreign pension and foreign tax credit for tax paid for that pension.

This pertains to my 2023 return that I already filed, having received new information about the amount of foreign tax I need to pay, I am in the process of amending it.

I use TurboTax Home and Business 2023 Desktop version on Windows 10.

In 2023 I started receiving a pension from France, for which I am taxed there, and so I need to declare the pension in the US, and also the tax paid over there as foreign tax credit and avoid double taxation.

While I was able to enter the pension amount (sort of, see below), I could not enter the corresponding foreign tax credit amount, despite being guided live on the phone by two Turbo Tax experts - they could not figure this out.

Also, I've seen this question asked several times but none of the answers helped either.

The two suggestions I got for how to enter the pension:

  1. as a 1099-R substitute, or
  2. under "Miscellaneous income/Other reportable income"

(1.) doesn't seem to be a good solution because I don't have a valid EID, which triggers errors.

However, using either (1.) (and ignoring the EID error) or (2.), I then tried to enter the foreign tax credit under “Deduction and Credits/Estimates and Other Taxes Paid/Foreign Taxes”. This takes me through a number of steps but it doesn’t get anywhere where I could enter the foreign tax paid for that pension (I can list the steps if that would help)

This is probably not an uncommon situation (there must be many US citizens or immigrants who worked abroad at some point and are now receiving foreign pensions), so it’s unclear why this is seemingly impossible (or so unobvious that even experts can’t figure it out).

I would greatly appreciate any help on this, hopefully with a step-by-step guide.

Thank you.
