How do we qualify for an energy credit if we installed a new central air and heating unit

You'll enter your information for the Non-Business Energy Property Credit by clicking on the Federal Taxes tab, then Deductions & Credits, then under Your Home select Home Energy Credits and follow the prompts.

TurboTax will ask you some questions about your home where the energy-efficient equipment was installed (it must be your primary residence, located in the US, and must be an existing home rather than new construction).  After answering the questions, you'll enter the amount of the central air unit in the input box marked Energy-efficient building property.

For central air conditioners, this credit is limited to $300, with a lifetime limit of $500.  Here's the link to the IRS Form 5695 Instructions, which discusses all aspects of the energy credits: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i5695.pdf
