Guidance on W4

Hello,

Our 2024 tax return was huge, and I would rather get more money per paycheck in 2025. My initial w4 with employer was filed as single (though I was married) and no dependents. Now we have 3 dependents and another on the way in March 2025. My wife does not work but stays home with our kids and our only income is mine (one W2).  I recently updated my w4 with same employer in Jan 2025 as married filing jointly and put in 3 dependents. I looked at my most recent paystub after the updated w4 and it was higher but showed $0 in federal tax was withheld. How do I fix this so I get more money back per paycheck and still get a smaller refund instead of owing?

thanks!

Guidance on W4

@joshjessup - use the IRS withholding calculator.

However, if there are no withholdings, you can't get more money back in your paycheck.  i.e. there can not be negative federal withholdings.

it is possible that based on your income, filing status and number of children, there is no required federal withholding.

the Estimator will show you exactly how to complete your W-4.
