eligibility for recovery rebate credit.

I have a question on the recovery rebate credit. My son turned 19 in December 2020 and is a full-time 1st year college student as of August 2020. If I choose not to claim him as a dependent, is he eligible for the recovery rebate credit.   

If I do the following,  TurboTax will not add the recovery rebate.

If I do the following, TurboTax will let me add the recovery rebate.

Any guidance on this would be helpful.  Thank you.

Q.  If I choose not to claim him as a dependent, is he eligible for the recovery rebate credit? 

A. No.  The rule is: if you CAN claim him; he does not get to claim himself, even if you don't actually claim him.  It's not your option.

So, in the TurboTax interview, you must answer that Someone else CAN claim him on their tax return.
