Do I check paid for more than half of their living expenses and other support under less common situations for my child dependent?

For the child to qualify as your dependent, you (and, perhaps, another parent) paid more than half of the dependent child's support for the year.

 

Support is a basic test of dependency but it is addressed differently for a qualifying child than a qualifying relative.

 

For a qualifying child, the support issue is:

 

  • Support: The dependent must not have provided more than half of their own support during the year.

For a qualifying relative, the support issue is:

 

  • Support: You (the taxpayer) provides more than half of the total support for the year.

TurboTax software will ask you simple questions and give you the tax deductions and credits for which you are eligible based upon your answers.
