Credits and deductions not working

We have adoption expenses we pain in 2022 but the adoption didn't go through. We paid fees to an adoption agency as well as travel expenses. Turbo Tax is saying "It turns out you don't qualify for this credit." We meet all the criteria to be eligible for the credit.

Also, the calculator showing how much you owe or your refund didn't adjust when I was entering our deductions and credits.

Credits and deductions not working

One reason the adoption expenses may be denied is they may apply to the year the adoption is final, or if it doesn't become final as in your case, the year after the expenses are incurred. Here is a exerpt from IRS tax topic 607:

Also, see this explanation in TurboTax:

I'm not sure what deductions and credits you are referring to specifically, but deductions are typlically itemized deductions that only benefit you if the total of them is more than your standard deduction ($12,950 single filer or $25,900 married-joint in 2022.) Often, credits can be denied if they reduce your income below $0, or for a host of other reasons. We would need to know what credits you are referring to to be more helpful.

You can follow these instructions to see your form 1040, line 24. If it is $0, that means you don't have any tax and often that will mean the benefits of tax credits is limited.

You can view your form 1040 and schedules 1 to 3 while working in the online version of TurboTax by following these steps:

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the left menu bar
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Look under Other Helpful links….
  4. Choose View Tax Summary
  5. Look in the left menu bar and choose Preview my 1040
  6. Scroll down the page to see form 1040 and schedules 1 to 3
