Can we deduct something donated in 2016, but not acknowledged until 2017?

We donated some cemetery plots to the VFW. The paperwork was dated 12/28/16, but they did not receive it until January and their receipt for it is dated in 2017. Can we still deduct it for 2016 or will we have to wait until 2017?

Yes you make a contribution at the time of its unconditional delivery. Keep the acknowledgement with you tax records but you can use it for 2016.
