Can I spread the basis for the sale of timber across years or do I need to claim the entire amount in year of the first of several harvests?

We inherited the land in 2004.  The forester who planted the trees in 2000 calculated the value of the timber.

If you harvest the all the trees you use all the basis ... harvest only 1/2 use only 1/2 ... etc.
