Can I just go ahead and put in the amount I was told verbally about the interest we paid on a mortgage loan in 2017 when we haven't received the 1098 in the mail?

You can report mortgage interest you paid not on a 1098 form in TurboTax.
In the Deductions & Credits section, click Edit/Add under Mortgage Interest.
You can choose 'the seller is financing this loan and I didn't receive a 1098'.
On the next screen, you will need to enter the lender's name, address, social security number or EIN, and on the following screen enter the amount of mortgage interest you paid (screenshots).
It would be good to have some documentation on this; a letter from the lender with the amount of interest, or a payment summary showing the interest.
