Can i deduct vehicle espenses as a carpenter

It depends.  If you are a self-employed carpenter, and you have to drive to various locations to; complete a 'job', purchase supplies or meet with future customers, then yes, you can deduct as an expense when you are completing your taxes.  If you are an employee and you drive to various locations as requested by your employer, and you were not reimbursed, you will also be able to claim as an expense also. However, you will only be able to claim them as an employee if;

  • You can itemize deductions and
  • They, and your other expenses, exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income.  To learn more about the 2% rule please read 2% Rule For Employees Deduction

There are also a few more criteria's for claiming mileage or deducting vehicle and deciding if you will use the actual expense or standard mileage.  To help you decide, please read the article below that will cover this information.
