Can I claim the Educator Expense Deduction if I am employed by an elementary school as an occupational therapist?

I am employed as a full-time Occupational Therapist by the Department of Education and work at a public elementary school. I am NOT a 1099 contractor and I received a W2 for my 2022 wages. Can I claim the Educator Expense Deduction for expenses incurred to pay for supplies, equipment and other materials which I used in my work at the school?

I know that this deduction is allowed for teachers, instructors, counselors, principals or aides. Occupational therapists are not specifically mentioned in the criteria set out by the IRS. I wanted to confirm whether I may qualify for the deduction, given that I do work in a classroom setting with the children at the school and have incurred expenses for the materials used in the children's treatment plan.

Yes, provided you are associated with kindergarten through 12th grade.  I believe you would qualify as a counselor.

"Eligible educators include anyone who is a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide in a school for at least 900 hours during the school year. Both public and private school educators qualify."

To post the expenses, go to:

  3. Select Teacher (Educator) Expenses
  4. Continue through the interview.

New school year reminder to educators; maximum educator expense deduction rises to $300 in 2022
