Can I claim county property tax payments as a deduction?

If the county property taxes are assessed based on the value of the property, are applied uniformly to other similar properties in the county, are used for general governmental purposes to benefit the county and they were assessed and paid during the tax year, then they would qualify as an itemized deduction for federal income tax purposes. You can only deduct state income taxes up to an aggregate of $10,000 under current tax rules in 2023. You must be able to benefit from itemizing your deductions for it to benefit you. Even if you can't benefit from itemizing your deductions on your federal tax return, it may benefit you on your state tax return.

You enter the taxes in the Deductions and Credits section of TurboTax, then Your Home, then Property Taxes
