Amended Tax Return

I have filed my 2019 taxes.  I am thinking about amending them and not taking my son as a dependent credit and paying the additional $500 so he can claim himself and get the $1200 and then give me $500 and he would be ahead $700.  What are your thoughts

Amended Tax Return

My thoughts would be to leave your return as it was filed.  When it was filed, you certified that what you filed was true and accurate, including the fact that you were eligible to claim your son as a dependent.  Changing your return now should not affect his ability to receive a stimulus check because he could have been claimed as a dependent.

According to the information on the IRS site, if a person was claimed as a dependent or can be claimed as a dependent, then they will not be eligible for a stimulus payment.
