Do I file NC Taxes as nonresident or resident?

I'm enlisted in the Army with a home of record in Illinois.  My wife is a NC resident (born, raised, school all here) and made a small amount of taxable money this year.  We are filing joint federal tax returns.

Do I file NC state taxes as nonresident(only her income is taxed but she is clearly a resident)?  Or a resident(I'm only here because of the military, she is the only resident)?

You will not need to be included on a NC state income tax return because your home of record is IL.

Since your wife was never a resident of IL, then she will not be covered under MSRRA so she will have to file a NC resident state income tax return.

Therefore, you would still be able to file your federal income taxes jointly but you would need to file your state income taxes as married filing separately.
