State residence

My elderly Mother lived with my sister in KY all of 2023 but owned her home in VA, selling it in Oct. Do I file as a part-year resident in both states, or KY only?

It depends. If she moved to KY to start a new life in 2022 then she was a KY resident that happened to own a home in VA for 2023. If she was not sure about moving to KY , then part year for each.
