State filling for IL
It depends.
Do you reside in IL?
If so, you would need to file an IL return if you were required to file a federal income tax return or your Illinois base income is higher than your exemption allowance.
If not, has your wife established a permanent residency in another state?
If so, you may not have a filing requirement at all in Illinois.
You would only file a return in Illinois as a nonresident if you have taxable income from Illinois sources and have a tax liability.
See the attached for more information on when you may need to file in Illinois.
As far a filing jointly, it typically results in a lower tax liability so it is generally beneficial.
When filing separately is better
