On one W-2, there is an entry under "Local Taxes" but there is no "associated state" listed. Income for W-2 is for 2 states but not our home state. What do I choose?

We live in SC, but income for this W-2 is for NC

If the W-2 is incomplete, you may either:

  • Contact the preparer of the W-2 for further clarification, or
  • Attempt to discern the state associated with the locality through Google or other research.  There may be a website for the tax authority explaining their income tax policies and procedures.

Usually, the "associated state" is the state in box 15 on that line on the W-2.  The locality name in box 20 should be some help.

It's probably not needed for anything an can be ignored.

That said, a quick internet search (plus this excellent summary of  local taxes https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4094807-having-studied-some-of-the-complaints-that-different-users...)  indicates there are no local income taxes in either NC or SC.

Exactly, what is in boxes 18-20 on your W-2?
