My wife works in NY, and I in NJ. We live in NJ and file fed tax jointly. Is it necessary to declare our combined income for NY? Or file NY on my wife's income alone?

Can i file NJ tax jointly, and NY on my wife's income  separately? I don't understand why NY would want to charge tax on my income earned in NJ.
