My return states an issue has occurred

I just filed my return and it is showing "an issue has occurred and to check back shortly"
what does this mean?

That message was most likely because there was such a high volume of submissions right before the IRS filing deadline.

You can check your filing status by following these instructions: TurboTax Tools: Where's my Refund?

You can also use the IRS tool Where's My Refund to check if your e-filed return has been received.
