My niece is a FT college student in DC. While on breaks, she works in NYC and while in school, she works in DC. What's her residency status for filing her NY taxes?

My niece is a FT college student in DC. While on breaks, she works in NYC and while in school, she works in DC. What's her residency status for filing her NY taxes?

Whatever state she goes home to when she is not in school is her home state.  So for NY, she would be a FT resident, temporary absences, such as being away for college, do not change your residency status. 

 She would be a non-resident for DC

Whatever state she goes home to when she is not in school is her home state.  So for NY, she would be a FT resident, temporary absences, such as being away for college, do not change your residency status. 

 She would be a non-resident for DC
