Interest being taxed by two states

Hello,

For context, using Premier version as download on my Mac. Live in NJ and work in NY. I was able to assign each state the correct W2 wage info but I am being taxed by both NY and NJ for my interest on savings bonds I redeemed. My understanding was that INT was only taxed by the state you live in rather than both states in this instance. If this is correct, how would I remove it from my NY taxes?

Much appreciated!

Interest being taxed by two states

If the interest if from US savings bonds then none of it is taxable on either state return. Make sure you have entered the savings bond interest in Box 3, Form 1099-INT.  Once this is completed you should NOT see this interest taxed on either state.

  • On the NY return you should see a subtraction for the US savings bond interest.  Review the questions for subtractions and this will show up on Form IT-225 (here for your convenience to review)
  • On the NJ return will not tax the US bond interest

TurboTax will show this appropriately if it is recorded correctly in the federal interview.
