Im trying to file single and it keeps asking for a spouses ss number

If you indicated that you are married, but do not want to file a joint tax return and you do not qualify to file as Head of Household, then your filing status would be Married Filing Separately. Using that filing status, you must enter the spouse's name and Social Security number even though they are technically not a part of your return.
