I live in Texas and worked remotely for a company in California for 3 months, and made $3,500 total. I received a W-2 and 1099-MISC. How do I file this on my taxes?

Also, I received a 1099-NEC from a different company based in Texas that I freelanced for. How do I file that on my taxes, as well?

The W-2 will report in lines 15-20 whether you have an obligation to pay CA state taxes.  Report W-2 at Federal / Income & Expenses / Your income and expenses / Job (W-2).

To report the 1099-MISC,

  • Go to the Search magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  Enter '1099-misc'.
  • Click on 'Jump to 1099-misc'.

You will report this as self-employment income on a Federal 1040 Schedule C Profit or Loss From Business.

To report the 1099-NEC,

  • Go to the Search magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  Enter '1099-nec'.
  • Click on 'Jump to 1099-nec'.

You will report this as self-employment income on a Federal 1040 Schedule C Profit or Loss From Business.
