I live in Kansas but went to Arizona to get medical professional help. While in AZ, I had two appointments at Mayo Clinic two weeks apart. Can I claim expenses on return?

After the two doctor appointments, I stayed in AZ for relaxation. What part of my expenses can I deduct as medical expenses?

You can deduct the airfare for the Medical Travel, and any of the local expenses related to the appointments. For Example:

  • Travel from Hotel to Doctor's Appointments
  • Meals are not deductible as a medical expense deduction. even when travelling.  From IRS Publication 502:  "You can include in medical expenses the cost of meals at a hospital or similar institution if a principal reason for being there is to get medical care." There is no additional provision to deduct meals when travelling for medical care outside of a hospital.
  • The lodging is primarily for and essential to medical care
  • There is no significant element of personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel away from home.
