I have 2 1095a from two different states

I had marketplace insurance in UT in 2023 and then, moved to CA thinking I would stay, so signed up for  Covered CA (got tax credit of $200), did not end up using the insurance, moved back to UT (did not cancel UT marketplace while in CA). But I now I have 2 1095a for both UT and CA (just 1 month). Would I be penalized for having two coverages? CA was only for 1 month. How do I go about filing state taxes? I was in CA for 1 month. Thank you.

It is not a problem to have more than one Marketplace insurance plan because you changed residency to another state during the year. You can enter both Forms 1095-A in TurboTax.

  • Add the information for your first Form 1095-A
  • At the "Here's what we have for your 1095-As" page, click Add Another button, and follow the steps to enter your second form.

If you were in California for a very short time, you would still file a California state return if you received income from any source while you were a California resident. If you received no income at all while in California, then you don't need to file a California return.

See this California FTB webpage for more information:

If you lived inside or outside of California during the tax year, you may be a part-year resident.

As a part-year resident, you pay tax on:

  • All worldwide income received while a California resident
  • Income from California sources while you were a nonresident

A nonresident is a person who is not a resident of California.

Generally, nonresidents are:

  • Simply passing through
  • Here for a brief rest or vacation
  • Here for a short period of time to complete:
    • A job
    • A transaction
    • Contract work

If you do file more than one state return, prepare the return for Utah last since you lived there at the end of the year. Please also see this TurboTax tips article for more information on filing returns with multiple states.
