I entered the incorrect a/c # number on my NY state return. I know that if you do that for the Fed return the IRS sends you a paper check. Is it the same for NY state.

Yes, if you entered the wrong bank account number for the direct deposit of your tax refund, the bank will not recognize the account.
Your bank will return the deposit to the state and you will receive a check from the agency in the mail. This will take more time than having the amount deposited directly to your account.
