I am filing a Nebraska state return and a Massachusetts return. When I lived in Massachusetts I had my septic system upgraded and still have a credit available for that but when I put that in my nebraska state tax owed goes up

Did you have any MA income that tax was assessed on? It sounds like the addition of the septic credit is reducing the amount of tax paid to MA, which in turn would reduce the credit on your Nebraska return for tax paid to MA.
