How do we file a non-resident state tax return from 2021, 2022, and 2023?

for 2021 and 2022 you would need to purchase the desktop app for each year. If you had a resident state income tax return that must be added along with the nonresident state return. you can then upload your Turbotax file and prepare the nonresident state which must be mailed. if there are nonresident state income taxes you could amend your resident state return to claim credit for the double-taxed income.

for 2023

  1. Fill out Personal Info Section:

    • Open your return in TurboTax.
    • Select “My Info” from the menu.
    • Scroll down to “Other State Income” and click “Edit.”
    • Answer “Yes” to the question, “Did you make money in any other states?” and select your nonresident state(s) from the dropdown.
    • Click “Continue” to return to your Personal Info summary
  2. Complete Nonresident Return First:

    • After finishing your federal return, you’ll automatically move to the State tab.
    • You’ll see your nonresident state(s) listed in addition to your resident state.
    • Always complete the nonresident return first if you’re filing in multiple states. Your resident state might give you a credit for any taxes paid in that situation.
    • Select the long form (if available), even if TurboTax defaults to the short form.
    • Only report income attributable to the nonresident state.
    • If you’re preparing a nonresident return solely to recover erroneous tax withholdings, enter 0 for the amount of income earned in that state. This will eliminate your tax liability for that state, resulting in a full refund.
    • If you live in a reciprocal state, consider submitting an exemption form to your employer to avoid filing a nonresident return next year
