For state taxes I came across this question - Did you become CA resident DURING 2016 ? I moved here before 2016. What should I choose - Yes or No

Did you live in Calif for all of 2016? If so then you are preparing the wrong Calif return (part-year or nonresident Form 540NR) - review your residency entries in Personal Info.

I recommend that you say NO.  you arrived in CA in 2915 or some year prior to 2016.  They want to calculate your 2016 activities for tax purposes.
