filing joint for federal and joint but separate for state

My wife lives and works in Virginia which has a state tax return and I live and work in Tennessee which has no tax return.  When I file joint for federal its no problem but when I try to file only her state tax return your software will not allow it separate filing from the federal.  as per your help documents i filled out a separate federal with just her info and the state of virginia.  I dont know how to continue.

You need to prepare a mock married filing separate (MFS) return, then file state for Virginia.
